The Different Food Types

Eggs are broken down further into egg substitutes, cooked egg products, and read-to-eat egg products. Meat and poultry are further divided into four major categories: beef, pork, and other meat. Meats include ground beef, hams, and sausage products. In addition to meat, there are also four types of milk: whole, skim, and skimmed.

Today, the USDA has developed a detailed guide to help Americans select healthy foods. The Food Patterns specify recommended dietary allowances for each food group, which are measured in cups or ounces. The food chart has a limited amount of calories (8 to 19%) for added sugars and saturated fats. This means Americans are encouraged to choose the nutrient-dense foods, while limiting the intake of fats and saturated fats.
